Today, we mark the life of an remarkable individual whose legacy is profoundly felt forty seven years after his passing. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. bravely stood up for what he believed in and has become an international symbol for hope and courage. King helped lead the civil rights movement and was instrumental in bringing about change in both law and in attitudes concerning race. His legacy is felt not only within the United States of America but across the world, where his message of equality and non-violence continues to be remembered. Here in Ottawa and across Canada, that message is an integral part of our society and culture. It is why we all should take a moment today to remember the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
