Today, we mourn those who have died at work and continue to fight - TopicsExpress

Today, we mourn those who have died at work and continue to fight for the living. Every year since April 28, 1985, gatherings have been held in communities across Canada to remember, mourn, and honour those who have lost their lives on the job. Labour unions have done a tremendous amount of work to recognize workers who have died, been injured and disabled while at work and to prevent future workplace accidents. Yet, employers are still failing to implement health and safety policies, particularly in industries like transportation, forestry, construction, and mining. Today, while we recognize that the many work-related deaths and injuries are still happening, we must also continue to work to prevent more tragedies. When work-related deaths occur, corporations who repeatedly fail to implement or adhere to health and safety policies ought to be investigated for criminal negligence. Today in Ottawa, the Canadian flag at Parliament Hill flies half-mast in recognition of the lives lost at work. Thank you for taking the time to gather and remember.
