Today we organized a Rally from Noor Mahal Chowk to Civil Secretariat against opening of illegal liquor vends in slum areas (Jhuggi Jhopris) of Karnal. We presented a memorandum addressed to Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police which was received by SDM Sh. Rajiv Mehta and DSP Sh. Raj Kumar on behalf of both the officers. This is a very sensitive and serious issue that liquor contractors having glow in hand with some corrupt officials of excise & police department are opening such small shops illegally in slum areas to sale country. Poor labourer who earned few rupees after full day hard labour, spend this money to purchase liquor instead of purchasing books for their children and bread and butter for their families. Moreover their ladies are also doing hard labour for welfare of their families but in evening they are treated hard handily, just to pressurize them to spend their hard earned money for purchase of liquor from such illegal vends. Are we living in civil society? Its a big question. After our todays attempt, I got a call from one of the partner who was trying to convince me that they need to do this illegal business to cover their cost of contract. I asked him, why he is ruining lives of poor labour just for lust & greed of more money, but he had no answer. I know that now onwards I am going to face pressure from such culprits or may be some false allegation too, but I dont care for that. We pledge that we will now allow, sale of liquor in slums areas and we are not going to take bake our steps... I am ready to face consequences as for me its matter to save innocent lives.
