Today we registered the screenplay adaptation of Beautiful Nate by Dennis Mansfield with the WGA. Its been a very interesting and rewarding experience, adapting someone elses story for the screen. Dennis made it quite enjoyable as he approached me with his book Beautiful Nate, understanding that a screen adaptation requires the condensing, rearranging and even re-invention of events, and sometimes the outright compression of many people into a singular character (or visa versa). Yet, because he was willing to let me guide the process as a screenwriter, I was able to honor him as the original writer (and one who actually lived the story!); and between the two of us we came up with something that is both fitting for a two hour narrative and spiritually true to the actual journey. I want to do this again.
