Today we remember Private John W. Blunt, Company C, 1st Battalion Virginia Infantry, Local Defense Troops, (Ordnance Battalion)(Armory Battalion). The Daily Dispatch of 3 March 1864 reported Lieutenant Blunt of the Armory Battalion was killed in action at Green’s Farm (on present day Three Chopt Road) on the evening of 1 March 1863, however the member killed was Private J.W. Blunt. Private Blunt was buried in Shockoe Hill Cemetery on 2 March 1864, the interment book entry reading, “John W. Blunt, 40 yrs., Killed in Battle.” The newspaper of 3 March 1863 also contained a notice of Blunt’s death: Killed, on the battle-field on Greens farm, near this city, on Tuesday evening last, in the 39th year of his age, Mr. John W. Blunt, a private in company C, Armory Battalion. His funeral will take place at Clay Street Chapel this afternoon at 3 oclock. The friends of the family are invited to attend. An employee of the Confederate Ordnance Department, J.W. Blunt had enlisted as a Private in Captain A.J. Suddith’s Company (Company C) of the First Battalion Virginia Infantry (Local Defense Troops) on 15 June 1863. Blunts grave is unmarked.
