Today we remember Private Joseph Delaune, Company B, 7th Louisiana Infantry. Private Joseph Delaune’s certificate of enlistment dated 18 March 1862 and signed by John H. New provides most of the information known about him. Born in East Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the 19 year old planter was 5 feet 8 inches tall with hazel eyes, brown hair and a light complexion. Delaune enlisted in Company B, 7th Louisiana Infantry, at Baton Rouge. Commanded by Captain Andrew S. Herron, the company was known as the Baton Rouge Fencibles. At least five soldiers with the surname Delaune served in Company B, but familial relationships have not been established. Made up of mostly Irish immigrants and native Louisianans, the 7th Infantry Regiment, known as the Pelican Regiment, was ordered to Virginia with more than 850 men and saw action at First Manassas, as well as the Seven Days battle and Cold Harbor. Joseph Delaune was admitted to Richmond’s General Hospital No. 21 on 26 October 1862 and transferred to the Small Pox Hospital on 11 November 1862. Delaune succumbed to smallpox and was buried in Shockoe Hill Cemetery on 30 November 1862, the burial record entry reading, “Jos. Delaune, Small Pox, Soldier.” His grave remains unmarked.
