Today we said goodbye to dear Gracie. Gracie came to us last - TopicsExpress

Today we said goodbye to dear Gracie. Gracie came to us last spring after having been dumped at the Downey shelter at the age of 14. We knew we probably wouldnt be able to place Gracie, but we let her settle in here in Grumpy Village, where her favorite activities were sitting the sunshine when the weather was nice, getting brushed, and hip-checking Daredevil and BearBear out of the beds. Gracie was a big girl--I dont think she was a Pekingese; I think she was a cocker spaniel mix of some type, but she was an entirely gentle soul who, though blind, taught herself the curves and contours of the dog-infested book nest and the backyard. She had a strong preference for particular beds, and, if she found them occupied, would simply sit on top of whoever was in it until they made room for her, too. There is an empty bed today at the dog-infested book nest, and I am immensely sad. I always tell myself that I am not getting attached to the seniors I take in, and then I always do, and I regret nothing, because as Aristotle pointed out, all virtues, including love, develop through daily practice. Gracie was a joy every single day we had her, and I am glad we could give her a few more days of sunshine, pepperoni, and comfort. Farewell.
