Today we traveled 3 hours to the West of Rwanda in the Butare District, to visit the National Museum of Rwanda as well as its General Director, and conduct healing workshop with the survivors of the Genocide at the National University of Rwanda, ages 24-28. Feelings of sadness, embarrassment, disappointment, and fear were shared, and tools were given to process those feelings. Special partnership was formed to continue working on oral history, research projects, annual essay and poetry contests and more. They were surprised to hear that I am a child of Genocide Survivor, they already had heard of the Ottoman Turkish Genocide, so they felt that I could really understand them, although I did reinforce that empathy is possible to nurture without having to go through the suffering.
