Today we visited Modena and its famous Ghirarlandia bell tower, whose bells were made in 1350 and still ring to this day. We were at the Porta Della Pescheria (a side door to the Duomo that has 12 carvings embedded in its frame, representing the months of the year), and heard the priests and parishioners singing during a communion service at the same time that the bells were tolling the hour. The combination of sounds was enthralling and evocative.
