Today we will gather in Denver to remember and celebrate the life of Dennis Dougherty, a very good friend of Judy and Dennis and the Matthew Shepard Foundation. If you read Judys book The Meaning of Matthew you will remember Dennis part in it at Matthews funeral. ...A middle-aged man Id never seen before introduced himself and handed me what appeared to be a business card. At the time, I thought, A business card? Really? I couldnt believe the guys gall.... Later that night, back at the hotel, I took the business card out of my purse and took a closer look at it. It identified the man as Dennis Dougherty, a Denver resident and member of the Washington, D.C.-based HRC. On the back of the card, hed scrawled a note: My mother and I have just donated ten thousand dollars to the HRC in Matthews name. I was so moved by Dennis Doughertys graciousness--and embarrassed enough by my own rush to judgement at the church--that I held onto his card. A month or so later, I called Dennis Dougherty to talk with him more about his work with HRC.... Looking back on it now, I see that my decision to call Dennis Dougherty on one of those cold and lonely Wyoming days was one of my first attempts to find my new voice.
