Today we would like to spotlight one of our long term rescues, Charley. Charley came to us from a very busy Atlanta, GA shelter where he was once adopted out as a cute puppy, and found himself back in the same shelter 2 years later in horrible shape. The staff could not believe his condition. He walked like a 90 year old man hunched over from a severe case of luxating patellas (rear knees bowed outwards), missing hair, and overall emaciated. He barely had enough energy to walk 10 feet. His journey to PWD was no easy feat. He ended up at the emergency vet in GA with Gastroenteritis probably due to over eating at the shelter. After several days there he was cleared to be transported from GA to MD. Upon his arrival to PWD in October of 2013, we could not believe our eyes. We knew he needed us and our orthopedic vet team to help him. We knew it was going to be a long haul. We knew it was going to be expensive. We also knew he deserved this chance. He was too young to be in this condition. We made that commitment to him. We would give him the TLC needed to be healthy enough to endure double knee surgery, and find him his perfect home. For several months he ate a bland diet made by some of our dedicated volunteers, and we slowly transitioned him to our high quality dog food. He quickly started gaining weight, and his hair grew back. In January 2014 it was decided to go ahead with the double knee surgery, he was finally healthy enough. Surgery was complete, and was a success! After months of recovery (during a VERY COLD, VERY ICY winter!) Charley looked like a different dog! A dog that had a very visible disability when he walked though our gate in October, now looked very normal, almost hard to tell he has a disability. We thank our Orthopedic Veterinarian for his successful surgery! Charley is a very active boy who loves to play outside. He enjoys chasing the ball, going for walks, going for car rides, but also has no problem just lounging around on his dog bed. He is a very smart boy and would benefit from one on one obedience training. After spending quite some time here, we know him very well. He would do best in a home with a male human companion. He likes women too but prefers men. Ideally he would go to a home with no other animals, or another very laid back dog companion. He has made a couple canine friends while he has been here, they have all been very neutral, laid back dogs. We know Charleys perfect home is out there somewhere, we just need your help finding it! Please share his story and help us spread the word about this sweet boy who deserves a happy ending! Until then he will be loved and cared for here at PWD!
