Today wed like to congratulate and THANK Kayla, COWFs teen intern for 2014. Kayla has had the opportunity to volunteer with COWF, work with Shriners Hospital for Children Los Angeles, implement new initiatives and fundraise as a Children of War Foundation intern. Interning for COWF has been life changing for Kayla and has now motivated her to take on bigger and better challenges that will ultimately lead her to a path of great success and change for the better in her community. Kayla has also motivated her classmates, friends and family to give back and volunteer. THANK YOU KAYLA! We are proud of you :) Giving back and community outreach starts with the youth. Contact us for opportunities or suggestions on how you can get involved. [email protected] -COWF TEAM A personal statement from Kayla: Before learning about Children of War, I was a typical teenager in Los Angeles, spending countless hours on my phone texting meaningless words to my friends. But ever since I started occupying my time with volunteering for Children of War, I slowly feel more relaxed and in general, much happier. I will always remember the first moment that I met Abdul. He spoke no English and we had no means of communicating. When I first saw him he had a timid, yet friendly smile spread across his shy face. And that was when it hit me; this seven-year-old boy had lost so much and still, he managed to be happy. Having Abdul as part of our family has taught me not to fuss about the little things in life and how to be grateful for my blessings and my life in America. Abdul has showed me that happiness is not found through material goods but through showing love and most importantly giving back to other. In just three months, I have already created a new website, smilesfrom7000miles. With the intention to bring more awareness to COWF and raising money for the organization. I am starting high school this year and I am super excited because I want to get my friends involved in my cause as well. Although I am no sure what my long term goals are, I do know that I want to work hard in high school and hope to go to UCLA or UC Berkeley. Whether I become a doctor, a journalist or a teacher, I will always continue to help with children that are living in less fortunate situations around the world. -Kayla
