Today were introducing you to a very special man we have the pleasure of knowing through our friends at Cobblestone Freeway - Culture & Adventure Tours Mykhailo Tafichuk is a self taught instrument maker and musician from Verkhovyna in the Carpathian Mountains, one of the few people out there who can still play/make traditional Hutsul instruments!. Every visit to his house (its a blue and yellow house in the mountains!!!) is a very special, enlightening experience!!! Enjoy some of his music and stories! Video transcript below #MusicMonday I was 12years old when I first saw this /a lira/. A man from Bukovyna, Chernivtsi oblast, was playing here in Yaseniv, by the church. He was blind and thats how he made a living. The first time I saw this I was stunned and just stood there watching him play for 2 hours! I was 12! Ever since then, my whole life, I dreamt of making and playing one myself. But it didnt happen until I was 60 /chuckles/ I didnt have the time, because I was working at a collective farm. Starts playing Noone ever played these at zabavas (parties). This was the music of the crippled. Disabled people would play his instrument and do songs, usually religious, spiritual ones.
