Today we’re making a pit stop in Cape Town – capital of South Africa and home to one of the world’s most unique cultures. Table Mountain, the city’s most famous landmark, towers over the 4 million strong population, framing every aspect of daily life. One of the oldest mountains in the world, its name comes from its flat top which makes it look like a huge dinner table. Locals in Cape Town enjoy a sunny climate, inspiring architecture and spectacular natural beauty - including a bustling penguin colony that basks in its cold Antarctic currents. However, despite recently being named as World Design Capital, South Africa is a land of remarkable contrasts. During Apartheid, segregation was enforced through the very way the city was built. Consequently, apartheid has left a physical legacy of a plan calculatedly designed to separate poor blacks from rich whites. Twenty years after the end of apartheid, a sense of separateness is as strong as ever. A huge proportion of the population lives in makeshift township communities, where each outdoor tap can be shared by as many as 20 families. Whilst South Africa generates two-thirds of Africas electricity and has the cheapest electricity in the world, over a quarter of its own households have no access to electricity at all.
