Today would have been a good friends 50th birthday. A moment when we look backwards and forwards. Celebrate past, celebrate future. With my friend, no longer walking beside us, you only be reminded of the what ifs. His life was cut far to short a few years ago in circumstances beyond his control that no one understands. Or can explain. Or accept. For whatever reason today, amidst the dreary, cold and windy world around me, as I was standing in a store, a theme came into my head. Like a mantra. I dont really play keyboards, have never played a church organ......but I just heard a hymn. Of sadly rejoicing life. The sound of a massive church organ in a cathedral. So I grabbed my $5 thrift store Casio keyboard (the only thing around) drove to the cottage, sat by the fire.....and just let it fall from my hands. Its not only a hymn of sadness, its a celebration of the fragility of life. The hardest happiness is amidst the amazing memories of those we have lost. This is A Hymn For Tommy.
