Today would have been my favorite aunts birthday- Aunt Gertie nee - TopicsExpress

Today would have been my favorite aunts birthday- Aunt Gertie nee Willie Gertrude Gilmore Wicke. She was my mothers oldest sister and a redhead. When I was born my hair was red and she was thrilled. Every time I went to her home in Auga Dulce she would have homemade brownies for me in a large round Tupperware sitting on top of her freezer in the kitchen. I knew she had made them just for me. It made me feel so special. She was more like a grandmother to me. The one grandmother I had was not a snuggler. Mom would always says (maybe because she had 11 children in the early 1900s) she loves children, just doesnt really like them. I saw her once or twice a year until I was about 10 when she moved to San Antonio. Though we offered for her to live in our home she wanted to live in a nursing home. I saw her often, but she was just distant. Aunt Gertie on the other hand, was hands on and very accessible. One summer, she invited me to come stay with her, by myself. While I was there, she invited her youngest granddaughter, Lisa Wicke, to join us. I remember that week like it was yesterday. I bought my first diary on a fun shopping trip. Uncle Bob (Aunt Gerties other half) taught me to crab and flounder. They would take our family to Rockport at night with their camper and away we would go. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AUNT GERTIE! I LOVE AND MISS YOU!
