Todays 3-2-1 Hit: HONEY by Bobby Goldsboro. A million-selling single ... #1 for five weeks on the Hot 100 ... #1 for three weeks on the Billboard CW chart(!) ... #1 for two weeks on the AC chart ... the Country Music Associations Song of the Year for 1968. All with a manipulative, sapfest of a death song that so many people, almost 47 years later, still love to hate or hate to love. (Thats not a criticism -- the calculation of this composition and musical arrangement of this track are shamelessly brilliant.) Two of the most unintentionally awkward and hilarious lyrics in the history of pop music (courtesy of composer Bobby Russell) appear in this song: 1) Slipped and almost hurt herself, and I laughed till I cried ... and 2) Guess you could say she saw through me, and hugged my neck. But make no mistake, this is quality cheese: The guy is casually cruel. The cause of Honeys early demise is left shrouded in mystery. The decision to fade the song on a reprise of the first verse (See the tree...) instead of the chorus is genius. And when the key change, angelic choir and tubular bells hit you in verse three, your goosebumps cannot help but react. Just try to stop them. Admit it: You love this recording. It hit #1 in April 1968. Side note: The Kingston Trios Bob Shanes version of the song (recorded first) charted the exact same week as Goldsboros. But like Honey herself, Shanes record expired far too soon at #104. https://youtube/watch?v=ZuuH2lnyizM
