Todays Advent Devotional Wednesday, December 24, 2014 - “Silent Night” Scripture: Read Isaiah 9: 2-7. Isaiah 9:6 NRS - For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. This verse speaks about how Jesus was born for us. He was given to us by God to counsel us. Most importantly, he was the Prince of Peace. I am reminded how, at this time of year, especially on Christmas Eve, there are more truces between warring factions, be they countries, governments or families, than at any other time of year. We set apart our differences to celebrate the joy that a birth, especially His birth, brings to our lives. Our family gathers every year, usually in the Eagles’ Hall at Buzzard’s Bay, Massachusetts. Sometimes as many as 200 of us bring covered dishes to share, and presents for Santa to distribute to the children. It’s my chance to see cousins and others that I never get to see. The event ends with a group photo in front of the hall. This year, we will be here. I will miss the gathering, but I do not miss the snow that is already blanketing the region! Our family is here so we will have a smaller gathering but just as memorable. This baby, who was born over 2000 years ago, is still among us. The power of the authority that rested upon his shoulders, the power that brought us together and united us, is still reigning over our hearts. Father, we thank you for the wonderful gift of your son - a gift that brings us peace, a break in fighting, if only for a short time, a break that shows us that we can set aside our differences to celebrate the birth of a child. Help us live that peace and grace year-round. Yielding: I will remember this gift, your son, and reflect on the peace that He can bring to our world. I will remind others encountering times of strife that He is the Prince of Peace. Irene A. Neitz
