Todays Affirmation: CORRELATIONS AND NOT EXACT EQUATIONS Most of the science of human behavior still is understood through correlations and not simple equations which perfectly results in “this then that” type answers. Very seldom when dealing with the complexity of human behavior will we find a rule that A always equals B. It is usually something more like A tends to lead to B in some situations as long as C, D, or E are not present. It is difficult to simplify truths about our experience into a few lines on a beautiful poster. With every statement of “how life is,” there almost always are exceptions which deviate from the stated truth about life. Just because we are able to point out an apparent exception to the rule does not invalidate the whole insightful principle. It just is a reminder that we need to mindfully evaluate thoughts presented as eternal truths and not accept them as inflexible dogma. I love efforts of others to encourage self-empowerment and responsibility because it is through taking charge and responsibility for our choices that we empower ourselves. There is a strong correlation between people that believe they have power to direct their lives and life satisfaction. Yet because we are responsible for some of the events of our lives does not imply we are responsible for all the events of our lives. There will be events in our lives which are not of our choosing. Empowerment to direct our lives is not the same as some having omnificent power over the happenings of the universe or even the behavior and actions of others. A self-autonomous being does not have power over all external and internal events of their lives, but they have developed skills to respond to many of the events they encounter in a constructive and purposeful way. If we believe we have a choice or believe we have no choice, we effectively are correct either way. When we believe we have no choice we become nothing more than a blade of grass being blown to and fro whichever direction the wind blows. When we believe we have a choice we become engaged in our experiences and plan and take action to arrive at our desired destination undeterred by the obstacles we encounter which are not of our choosing. We can become the captain of our ship. We cannot always choose the direction or force of the wind, but we can move the sails to use the wind to propel us forward. I choose to choose my path through life. I take responsibility for where it leads. ~Troy Murphy Flourishing Life Society
