Todays Church notes.. Rev Kevin Cosby 3/30/14 - The Strong and the Weak -Romans 15:1-2 -You find the strong and the weak in every community -Why? -Nature - there is a diversity of talent in people. Everyone is not equal. Everyone should however be given equal opportunity -Nurture - the things we are exposed to is what nurtures us -Where you live determines the quality of what you get -Question - How are the strong supposed to respond to the weak? -Exploitation -Edification (build up the weak) -American wealth gap: The net worth of the top 400 billionaires in America is greater than the 14 million African Americans -You cannot fix a problem if you only deal with symptoms. You have to get to the source -The past 20 years of hip hop has been conscious lowering instead of conscious raising -Chaos vs. Community -If you want to take down chaos you have to raise community which means you have to raise consciousness -Consciousness is the internal police - you dont need police -Forces that tried to take down the black community - poverty, slavery, segregation, white supremacy, image complex These forces did not win due to role models, businesses, church, school, families -Post 1968 - flight occurred in the black community. People left the community -Why the strong should help the weak -We were all once weak -The strong and the weak are inseparably linked -The weak can bless the strong -If you dont lift up the weak they will bring the strong down -Racism has abated, but we are still dealing with the consequences of it -1 Cor. 1:27 -We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.
