Todays Classical Corner.. Schumann! Robert Schumann (1810-1856) - TopicsExpress

Todays Classical Corner.. Schumann! Robert Schumann (1810-1856) was a German composer and influential music critic. He left the study of Law, to pursue a career as a virtuoso pianist. He may have become the finest pianist in Europe, but a hand injury ended that dream, and Schumann then focused his musical energies on composing, writing exclusively for the piano until 1840, after which he among other things composed also for chamber, orchestra, and vocal songs. Schumann suffered from a lifelong mental disorder, first manifesting itself in 1833. After a suicide attempt in 1854, Schumann was admitted to a mental asylum, at his own request, and died sadly two years later in 1856. To me, his music is vibrant, flowery, melodic, with a hint of mischievous melancholia (if there is such a thing).
