Todays Lesson in Meteo 101: Greenland Block It looks like a warm November across the western third of the US (west of the Rockies) if the prevailing pattern holds as longer range models indicate it should (through at least mid Nov). The main culprit is what we meteorologists refer to as a Greenland Block: a stubborn long-lived ridge of high pressure roughly centered over Greenland. The high polar ice cap of interior Greenland supports intense cold all year which tends to produce high pressure at the surface over the island, while a semi-permanent low (the Icelandic Low) sits off the SE coast of Greenland. The Greenland block tends to produce a stagnant pattern over the United States and Canada with reinforcing shots of cold often arctic air east of the Rockies while the western portion of the continent remains fairly mild with a ridge of high pressure overhead.
