Todays NYC tidbit: Who would have thought Chelsea NYC and Christmas were synonymous? Clement Clarke Moore (July 15, 1779 – July 10, 1863) was an American Professor of Oriental and Greek Literature, as well as Divinity and Biblical Learning, at the General Theological Seminary of the Protestant Episcopal Church, in New York City. Author of T’was The Night Before Christmas. Moores estate, Chelsea, was on the west side of Manhattan island above Houston Street, where the developed city ended at the time, and was mostly open countryside. It was once the property of Maj. Thomas Clarke, Clements maternal grandfather and a retired British veteran of the French and Indian War. Clarke named his house for a hospital in London that served war veterans. The estate was later inherited by Thomas Clarkes daughter, Charity Clarke Moore, and ultimately by grandson Clement and his family. The family mansion in the countryside of Manhattan also known as Chelsea Mansion was located at West 24th street, between 9th and 10th Ave. Where he also penned his famous Christmas story. His writing desk is kept at the NYC Historical Society.
