~*Todays Native Plant*~ ♥Blackfoot Daisy/Melampodium leucanthum: ( Rock Daisy, Plains Blackfoot) The Blackfoot Daisy is a low (6-12 in high), round bushy plant (6-12 in wide) with flowers of white rays surrounding small yellow central disks that produce a honey scent. Their stature makes them wonderful for ground cover in wildflower or landscaped beds. Older plants can be cut back half way to keep compact shape. These daisies produce flowers from March- November, require minimal water, good drainage, and are happiest in full sun or partial shade. They prefer dry, gravelly, sandy limestone-based soil types, and are good for use in rock gardens. Those planted in rich soil may produce many more flowers in the short term, but some suffer from shortened life span. They have a varied resistance to cold ranging from 25˚F to -30˚F. They are attractants to many pollinators including butterflies, nectar seeking insects, as well as seed eating birds. They also have a high resistance to deer.
