Todays #RandomObscureReference was: Chris Moneymaker. Well, hes not that obscure a name; I guarantee you everybody here in Vegas knows the name. In 2003, he entered a $1 Online Satellite poker tournament and won a seat at the famous World Series of Poker Main Event. (Those seats cost $10,000 usually) He happened to go on the right winning streak at the right time, as ESPN coverage of the tournament, after years of just being final table coverage had expanded to a seven-part series covering the whole main event tournament, right at the perfect time. The movie Rounders had come out in 98, and the WPT was starting to air on The Travel Channel, and online internet poker was coming together to start what would be called The Poker Boom, and Chris Moneymaker, would become the major first central figure of it, as his final heads-up victory over professional Sam Farha at the final table would cement his legendary status. At its height, the WSOP Main Event, would garner so many entrants, you could finish 9th and make a million dollars. Now, since the U.S. government shutdown of major offshore-based internet gaming sites, its boom period has ended prematurely. Its currently only legal to play online poker for cash, in the state of Nevada, but a smart and knowledgeable gambler knows that poker, is the only game in the casino, where youre not betting against the house, and therefore a good skilled player, actually has the advantage, making poker the one game that gamblers will continue coming back towards; so dont be too surprise by a poker resurgence in the near future. Its a lot easier to beat an opponent that to beat the casino, and thats the one advantage that makes it possible for a Chris Moneymaker story to come about again.
