Todays Word 16th January 2014 January 16, 2014 at 10:15am “The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.” (Psalms 23:1) That is the testimony of king David. David himself was the shepherd of his father’s sheep and he decided to make the Lord Jehovah his shepherd. Then he has decided to testify about his experience as a sheep in the flock of God. This is what he has to say, “The Lord is my shepherd and I shall not be lacking in anything” What does that statement mean? It means that, Jesus will take care of all the needs of His people. This does not refer to physical needs alone. Jesus takes care of all our needs – whether they be physical or spiritual needs. He takes care of our psychological needs too and he takes care of our financial needs as well. This is what God promises to all of His children in 1 Timothy 4:8 – “…but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” Let us understand that there are exceptions for every rule. This principle of spiritual life, which acknowledges that there are exceptions to every rule requires the whole book to be written, to explain and substantiate it. There are normal conditions under which God wants all His children to live. But under extraordinary circumstances, in accordance with the sovereign plan of God in each one’s life, God may guide some of His children under circumstances other than what He promised. Of course we know that, Job lived under poverty for some time. The person who went to take rest in Abraham’s bosom in the real life story recorded in Luke 16th chapter was a poor man. We also know about Macedonian church as presented in 2 Corinthians 8th chapter. Paul tells us they were very poor. Throughout the church history we may find such cases where the believers in Christ lived in poverty and yet were faithful to God. But let us not come to a conclusion that it is normal for every Christian to live in poverty. We must not think that financial prosperity and richness is unchristian or unscriptural. Under normal circumstances, God wants His children, “not to lack in anything”. Under normal circumstances, God wants His children to have sufficient food and clothing and reasonably sufficient financial resources to care of all our physical needs. A life that doesn’t lack in anything is the birthright of a Christian. This is true of our spiritual life also. God wants us to have sufficient wisdom and He wants us to have sufficient measure of the anointing of the Holy Spirit. He doesn’t want us to be lacking in prayer life either. He has promised to meet all our needs. We have every right to go to Him and ask whatever we need. Whenever we find that we are lacking in something, we must kneel down as ask our shepherd to come and meet our needs – “My Lord, why is it that I’m lacking in finances? Why am I found wanting in wisdom and holiness? Why do I lack the spirit of prayer? Please fulfill your promise that I shall not be lacking in anything.” Let us make a decision that we will live with abundance in every area of our life.
