Todays coal fired steam locomotive is the Wilmington & Western Railroad #98. This 4-4-0 American type locomotive was built in 1909 by the American Locomotive Company in Schenectady, New York for the Mississippi Central Railroad at Hattiesburg, MS. After many years with the Mississippi Central, the engine was sold to the Gulf Sand & Gravel Corporation in Louisiana in 1945. By 1960, the engine was sold to Thomas Marshall at Amite, LA. In 1966, #98 was moved to Greenbank, Delaware where it would become apart of the newly formed tourist railroad, the Wilmington & Western Railroad. In 1977 the locomotive was donated to Historic Red Clay Valley Inc. who kept the locomotive in operation for excursion service on the W&W. Today, the 98 is still in operating condition on the Wilmington & Western, and runs on many of the railroads excursions throughout the year.
