Todays contribution from the pocket dictionary for the nerdy chromatographer ... Chart Plotter: Prehistoric recording device used to produce plenty reinjections and repeated runs for over-range samples. Occasionally it did provide a full chromatogram with all peaks on the plot which was considered an art. The precious plot, really an exalted expression of a fine attuned instrument and sample preparation then was viciously attacked by the analyst with an even more prehistoric device, a so called “pair of scissors”. This archaic device operates like “cut and copy” on a mobile device but actually interacts with the physically present chart plot. The art work was in the process ripped apart, utterly destroyed and, what nowadays can only be interpreted as a ceremonial weighing, the damage measured on dedicated laboratory balance and the results hand coded into a laboratory journal (a physical manifestation of an Excel table or similar worksheet). The ultimate motivation of this procedure stays in the dark and it could only be assumed to be related to spiritual cleansing efforts by the performers. Some ancient devices can still be found in the center of quite vocal attention in some rare laboratories which strongly supports the notion of a spiritual aspect in using chart plotters.
