Todays devotion, Preparation, was written by Christina Erdmann, a Senior at MLHS. It is based on Psalm 119:105-106. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. I have sworn an oath and confirmed it, to keep your righteous rules.Psalms 119:105-106 As the Advent season rolls around, the preparation for Christmas Day becomes more than exciting. Our minds begin to fill with the wonderful thoughts of cookies, presents, Christmas trees, and twinkling lights. As we make our Christmas to-do lists, today’s passage from the Psalms reminds us that the only true preparation we need is found in God’s Word. For Christians, Advent should be a constant preparation of our hearts and minds for the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior and, ultimately, His return on the last day. Unfortunately, many aspects of life, although delightful, seem to crowd our minds. We like to focus on candy canes, decorations, and Santa Claus and we tend overlook the importance of God’s Word in our preparation. It is easy to become excited about the fun times to be had while we just as easily forget the true “reason for the season,” which is Jesus Christ. Fortunately for us, we have a God who loves us and is willing to forgive our sins. Even though we are caught focusing on the material elements of our lives, Jesus continually reminds us of His love for us through His Word, where we read about His amazing love for us, a love that would draw Him to the cross for us. God gives us the Bible as “a lamp to our feet and a light to our path” so that we may properly prepare for the amazing celebration on Christmas Day, and the even bigger celebration we will receive in heaven. During this Advent season, let us continually use God’s Word to prepare ourselves for the Christmas celebration, and ultimately for the day when we will see Jesus face to face. Prayer: Dear Jesus, please prepare our hearts throughout Advent and give us a spirit of patience as we prepare for Christmas Day and for the day of Your magnificent return. Help us to focus on the true meaning of Christmas and to never forget the importance of Your Word. Thank you for Your many blessings. In Your name we pray, Amen.
