Todays devotional. Deuteronomy 8:1-9 Contributor: Sandy Petersen God knew that the Israelites were not ready to enter the promised land and receive all the blessings he had promised and planned for them. He could have so easily just shown them the way...it wasnt that far. Instead, He let them wander around in the wilderness for forty years. This scripture tells us WHY. There was only one way they could enter in and claim His promised blessings. They had to learn to totally trust HIM and obey His commandments. Until they were ready, God provided for their every need, while He taught, and disciplined and prepared them for life in the promised land. Then, just as they were about to enter their new life, He reminded them about the discipline of those forty years and the importance of remembering to trust Him and obey His commandments. There is still ONLY ONE WAY to receive all the promises of God. JESUS CHRIST. God so loved the world that HE gave His only Son to die for us. Before he died on a cross so that we could be saved, Jesus spent his lifetime teaching us how to obey his Father and love one another. When asked what the greatest commandment was Jesus answered, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, Love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus said, I am the way the truth and the life, nobody comes to the Father except through me. As parents we must teach this truth to our children, as we love and discipline them to live as Jesus taught us. Then, as in todays scripture, when the day comes that we must let them go, we too can remind them of whose they are, and the lessons they have learned, confident that trusting and following Jesus assures them of the future that God has promised and planned for them. Father God, thank you for loving us and for sending Jesus to save us. Help us to love you with our whole hearts and our neighbors as ourselves.
