Todays devotional: For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? - I John 5:4-5 - Believers should never be subdued by the world. A believer’s faith in Jesus Christ not only helps them survive in the world around them, it gives them victory over the world. At church we fellowship with other believers, worship God with liberty, and are encouraged by the study and application of God’s word. It is good. Then we walk out the door to meet the world head-on. The influences of the world around us often seem overwhelming. We walk around the corner and meet discouragement face-to-face. Hardship is an always present threat. So what do we do? First we need to remember that the church building is not the church. We are the church. We are God’s promises on the earth. The word “overcome” in today’s verses means to subdue. It makes me think of Saturday morning wrestling when I was a kid. The victor subdued his opponent for 3 seconds to secure his win. He loser allowed himself to get in a place where he could no longer fight back. He had been subdued. We subdue the world with faith in Jesus Christ. He has already won the victory, and therefore we have too. When we stand with Jesus, the world can’t fight back. They are powerless to oppose Him. Today, take heart in the promise of Jesus’s victory.
