Todays entry in the 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die is the 1968 Byrds lp The Notorious Byrd Brothers. By the time the Byrds came to record their fifth album David Crosby had left in acrimony and Michael Clarke was soon to follow, first resigning then returning and being sacked but in this turbulent time they produced their masterpiece. Merging folk rock, psychedelic rock, country, baroque and jazz the album took the Byrds to another level with covers of the Goffin/King Goin Back and Wasnt Born to Follow joining nine self penned songs of a calibre the band had not achieved before. The album failed to achieve prominence at the time but has since been seen to be an album symbolising the best and the last of sixties psychedlia,as the album was being released however the surviving band members were recruiting the wonderful Gram Parsons and were on a journey to return to the roots of Country music with Sweetheart of the Rodeo
