Todays episode in The Story of Gabriel and Mamacita: I bailed out of bed this morning, hugged and made sure my own brood had eaten and pottied, then bowled out the door in a rush to visit my boy. There he was on the corner, waiting for me when I arrived. He still has trouble approaching me or the bowl but it didnt take nearly so long as it did yesterday for him to gather the courage to have breakfast. Today, Mamacita timidly appeared and began to approach me. In just a moment she had glued herself to my leg, lavishing in being petted. I heard a slurpy noise behind me and there was Gabe at the bowl, grabbing everything he could before Mamacita could move in. When he finished he stared as Mama was luxuriating in attention. His mind was officially blown. Evidently hed never seen human hands PETTING and not mistreating a dog. When Mamacita cleaned up the scraps Gabe left in the bowl she returned for more attention. I petted and talked to her as Gabe stared and chuffed. She followed me to the van and was ready to get in. It broke my heart to tell her that she has to stay a few more days as shes the only leverage I have on the boy. I took the trash out to the collection point up the road (my excuse for being in that area) and returned to the corner since they were both still there. I stopped again and petted Mama some more while Gabe pondered the new thing he was witnessing. Gabe wants him some of that attention. Hes trying to work out how to accept it. It hurts to leave Mama there even one more day but as I wrote above, shes all the leverage I have on him now.
