Todays film request: business motivation This request is not school-related, but work-related. It comes from a friend and supporter of Campfire, Gavin Baulch, who has a work colleague needing to gee-up his colleagues at a difficult time. I started going beyond our collection to the wild west of online films on YouTube, but returned to the work of our fabulous filmmakers for the quality and reality I thnk these films have so built-in. Heres my response (names adjusted for privacy reasons): Something to Tell You An award-winning short observational doco about a guy with a challenge, and a decision to make At first you could say its along the lines of... you think youve got problems and challenges... get a load of this! campfire.org.au/film/something-to-tell-you But more seriously, it allows a message and discussion and series of questions along the following lines: 1. What makes your job hard? 2. What obstacles do you need to overcome? 3. What did Gary need to overcome? 4. What advice would you give to Gary about staying motivated in finding a life partner? 5. What advice you just gave might apply to your own situation? Another one, on a similar line of discussion is about an actor looking for work: Aaron: Leading Man campfire.org.au/film/aaron-leading-man Finally, also a bit outa left field: The Palace campfire.org.au/film/the-palace I remember sharing some thoughts with work colleagues (back at a place where I worked for 8 years) at a time when there were some big, uncomfortable changes we needed to make, and was reminded of this idea of change. At that time for me personally, my eldest daughter was very young, and was getting worried about some little change in her life (to ME it was little - for her it was BIG!). I had a small insight into the fact that we ALL experience change throughout our lives and we need NOT be scared. Life is ALWAYS about change. So... what I LOVE so dearly about The Palace is that is so realistically shares a story of change: - the aspiration of a young girl wanting to grow up (in this case DESIRING change) - when the reality of the ugliness of it all hits home, she just wants to slink back to her dad and be carried home on his shoulders Oh how Ive felt this myself! Cant someone just tell me what to do? What decision i need to make? Why is this all so hard?! Where do i turn and how do I find guidance to get through to this new phase of where we need to be. For the young girl in the story -- whether or not she DID need to go to nightclubs -- she DID need to grow up, so it was a change she DID need to make in some way. This one might be more of a stretch to think about in your friends particular situation, but this is certainly a beautiful parallel story to share -- that your friends staff could experience together at this point. THIS is what I think short films do so well -- bring people together so they have an opportunity to talk about weighty matters. Let me know what you think, and if you go with none of my suggestions, thats fine too! All the best. Rich
