Todays first: Balog lecture I got to watch this lecture live from my couch on my phone. Author, scientist and award-winning photographer James Balog received the 2014 Sam Rose 58 and Julie Walters Prize at Dickinson College for Global Environmental Activism. The prize was created to focus attention on the need to reduce the impact of human lives on the planet, particularly given the rising population predictions for this century. Balog and his team braved treacherous conditions—crevasses, rock slides, avalanches, temperatures down to -40 F and frigid river crossings. His presentation provides a fascinating exploration of humanitys relationship with nature and a profound understanding of how climate change is affecting our planet. You could also go to the free exhibit in the library featuring 15 color photographs, Extreme Ice Surveys time-lapse video loop and informational panels. Fancy.
