Todays gonna be one of those tough ones: sorrow for the loss of a loved one, mixed with the peculiar relief that his suffering is over. Heres what I want to think of today when I think of my father-in-law Bill Link, who passed away this morning after a long illness: his booming laugh of sheer joy. He laughed a lot from joy, especially after his grandchildren arrived. I hesitate to use the term father figure only because my own dad did that job so well, but Bill was that to me as well. He was also the kind of friend you wish you had. He treated me like a friend from the first time we met (before Sue and I were even dating, on the staircase at the Euphoria Tavern, at a Dave Edmunds concert). One more story of joy: while parking the car he broke up laughing and crashed into a fence when Caitlin (who was maybe 4 or 5 at the time) correctly used a word that had no earthly place in a pre-schoolers vocabulary (expectorate). Rest easy, Bill. It is a privilege to have known you.
