Todays highlighted band, whos song, Simple Man was used in the #Supernatural episode Free To Be You and Me, is Lynrd Skynyrd. Lynrd Skynyrd was founded in 1964 by Gary Rossington, Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins was originally The Noble Five. After several name changes was renamed to Lynrd Skynyrd after a Gym Teacher of co-founder Gary Rossington, who strictly enforced the long hair on boys rule.He got tired of being hassled about his hair and dropped out. The band did have an amiable relationship with this teacher. Hes even was pictured in one of their albums. Lynrd Skynyrd falls under the Southern Hard Rock category Some of their other material include, Sweet Home Alabama, Smell That Smell and Free Bird.. After a performance in Greenville SC the band, some of the crew and Road Manager Dean Kilpatrick boarded a plane to get to their next gig. Due to a faulty engine the plane ran low on fuel and crash landed in Gillsburg MS. Killed were Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Steves sister and back up singer Cassie Gaines, Road Manager Dean Kilpatrick and Pilot and Co-Pilot respectively, Walter McCreary and William Gray. The band was reformed in 1988 with Johnny Van Zant, Ronnies younger brother as lead singer. After that there was a gentlemans agreement with Van Zant and Gainess widows that there should always be 3 surviving members in Lynrd Skynyrd. At one point there was an issue with the Skynyrd logo, The Confederate Flag. which is associated as a sign of racism. To separate themselves from racism They briefly stopped using it, but resumed as they stated it is part of their Southern heritage. They were inducted to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. Simple Man was written by Ronnie Van Zant and Gary Rossington. As quoted by Johnny Van Zant .....something we all live by. I think anybody out there needs to respect their mother and their mothers words.. I think its clear why a song like this was chosen to part of a #Supernatural episode. The song rings so clear of what The #Winchesters are all about and what family means. This turned out a bit longer than I try to keep them, but there was just so much to include about the band. Read more about them when you have a chance....Pam
