Todays history lesson. Who was Audie murphy? Some know him as a movie star and that is not why he is important. Audie L. Murphy served in the U.S. Army. He was the most decorated American combat Soldier of World War II, receiving every military combat award for valor available from the U.S. Army, as well as French and Belgian awards for heroism. Some awards he earned multiple times. The 19-year-old Murphy received the Medal of Honor after single-handedly holding off an entire company (more than 120) of German soldiers for more than an hour at the Colmar Pocket in France on January 26, 1945, then leading a successful counterattack while wounded and out of ammunition. He was a hero and saved countless American Soldier lives that day. It was also the third time he was wounded in combat during the war. When Audie Murphy tried to enlist, shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, he was denied enlistment because he was underweight and underage. His sister then provided an affidavit falsifying his birth date by a year and he enlisted. It was never foreseen how great of a Soldier he would become and the importance of his service. His Medal of Honor was an important part of his service however he did countless other brave and heroic actions during his years at war. Today is also the day that the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes Forrest came to an end. U.S. Army Soldiers defeated more than a quarter million of Hitlers troops, but it was the costliest U.S. action in history with more than 100,000 casualties. Honor the men and women that served in that battle. It was winter and it was fierce. If these Soldiers didnt stand before us all those years ago we may not be here today. Europe may not have been liberated from the Nazis. Whos going to fill their shoes?
