Todays moth collecting adventure is brought to you by the letter - TopicsExpress

Todays moth collecting adventure is brought to you by the letter B, for Bipedal Black Bear. Normally when Im collecting and I see a bear, I just sing a song loudly and they run away (presumably because Im off-key; its worked many times, so bears must have good musical taste). But the bear I saw today was wandering through the field where I wanted to collect Hemaris gracilis, with 2 little cubs. I decided irritating her would be a bad idea, so I just sat and waited for them to wander off. After they went away into the woods, I waited a few minutes, and then kept walking. Almost immediately, she popped back out of the woods walking on her hind legs, shuffling to the side while keeping her eyes on me, looking like a toddler trying to walk in a onesie that she hasnt quite grown into yet. If you ignore the fact that its a 200-pound carnivore trying to decide whether biting your face off is worth it or not, bears trying to move around on 2 legs are actually pretty awkward and hilarious. They do this penguin-esque sort of waddle that in no way honors the dignity of their species. I cant say I hope I get to see a bipedal bear again, but Im glad I got to see one for the experience. Needless to say, I decided fighting a bear was a bit too much to do for a moth, even for me, so I turned around and hiked back to my truck like a little sissy, totally moth-less. You win this round, bear... :-P
