Todays news in brief (Mar 10) 1. Weatherman predicts more heavy snowfall in Kashmir: The meteorological department in Jammu and Kashmir has predicted more snowfall in parts of the State in coming days. In a statement, the department said that there were major chances of moderate to heavy snowfall in most parts of Kashmir valley for next 24 hours. The maximum and minimum temperature in State’s summer capital Srinagar on March 11 is expected to be 9 and 1 degree Celsius respectively while in winter capital Jammu it is expected to be 21 and 1 degree Celsius respectively. 2. Two militants killed in Handwara encounter: Jammu and Kashmir police on Monday claimed to have killed two militants in a gunfight in Vilgam area of North Kashmir’s Handwara town. According to a police spokesperson, the slain militants belonged to Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit, one of them being the outfit’s group commander. Police said that the slain militants had infiltrated last year and were involved in some cases of militancy. 3. Decision of suspended students only after probe completes: Subharti University: The Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, that suspended over sixty Kashmiri students last week after they cheered for Pakistan’s cricket team, said that it would take a decision about them only after the probe into the incident in completed. The University refuted the media reports about revocation of the suspension orders. 4. Two held in connection with elderly man’s killing in Awantipora: The Jammu and Kashmir police have arrested a man and his son in connection with the killing of octogenarian father of an elected village head in Awantipora area of Pulwama district. Pertinently, Ghulam Mohammad Dar (85) was shot dead from point blank range near his house on Saturday evening. A police official said that role of the duo in the killing was being ascertained. 5. Army soldier commits suicide in Kashmir: An Army soldier on Monday alleged committed suicide at a camp in Kangan area of Ganderbal district, about 40 kilometers from Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital Srinagar. Reports said that Sepoy Sunil shot himself with his service rifle last night. It was initially not known why he took this extreme step, sources in police said, adding that the preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased used his service rifle to end his life.
