Todays not Teachers Day. But on that day, a week or so ago, I wanted to post about my PROFESSORA EUCARIA. She was my very first teacher, during one year only, and yet I remember her the most. For the sheer, genuine love and kindness she had for all us kids in the Portuguese Ninho Infantil, the equivalent of todays Kinder Garden. I can still see her bespectacled, freckled face, and hear her low voice in my mind. And I can still picture that classroom in which we [about 10 kids?] sat at one huge table. But no one ever took photos in classrooms or schools at that time. Except perhaps a formal one at the end of the year with everyone standing at attention, which no one did at Ninho Infantil. So imagine my surprise and jubilation today when I saw a photo of just that classroom, which I somehow recognised subconsciously. And then... no... hold on... it cant be... yes, that was me, at the extreme right! Took me a while to believe I wasnt dreaming! Who clicked this informal photo during class? Why? I have no idea... I only know when: it had to be 1957 or 1958. After looking at it dumbfounded and open-mouthed for the longest time, I even recognised my school bag on the table. What a pity Professora Eucaria isnt in the photo! A belated Happy Teachers Day to the best teacher in the world, wherever you are! And thank you, Memórias da India Portuguesa, for the incredible treasure-trove of pre-liberation photos of Goa, Daman and Diu you have posted on your website, whoever you are!
