Todays post is a Dutch-style work, dated 1875, by little-known Cornish artist, Edith Hume (1843-1906). Hume is best known for her oil paintings of fisher folk on the beach. The image of the peasant as being of picturesque charm was very popular with city dwellers in the late 19th Century, when there was a fashion for images of people who looked natural and close to the soil. Her style of painting is very similar to the group of artists in Holland known as the Hague School. Their painting was primarily a movement of realism, a reaction against the famous Romantic School whose painters depicted the Dutch landscape in an ideal way.
