Todays post is one that could be a difficult subject for some. However, our Hannibal drive through the Simpson Desert has reminded me of of what it was like not so long ago when camping. Where I am going with this comment relates to rubbish. I have to say that if anything impressed me about the Simpson this trip it was how clean we found. General rubbish was at a minimum. Its great to see that people are making the effort to take out what they take in. Which means a clean environment for anyone using this unique and iconic environment. Now this is where it gets dirty....The only rubbish we saw was toilet paper and lots of it. especially in the areas which may have been pleasant for camp. People using environments like this need to realise that toilet paper cant break down over night so it is important that we deal with it correctly. So I would like to recommend the following for a Desert Moment.... Part 1. Please take your shovel or spade off the vehicle and dig a deep hole. Part 2. Do your thing and have your desert moment. Part 3. Take a lighter or matches and burn the paper off. At this point Common Sense is required....Obviously, you need to be mindful of fire restrictions or what materials maybe around that could catch alight. In saying this if the paper is down the hole and you have the shovel in your hands you can control it. Part 4. fill the hole in. Now that was easy:-) So why dig deep and why burn off the paper? In a desert environment paper is not going to break down quickly so it needs a hand and burning it off will do this. The other problem is that if you only dig a shallow hole the Dingos and Foxes will uncover what you have done for a bit of extra nutrient and the paper will be left to blow around for the next 3 or so years. Better still there are various toilet systems out there that means what you take in can be taken out. We were trialing a system that we look to bring into our range soon. more about that later..... Please, if more people travel to these areas lets make them pristine so we can all enjoy them.
