Todays public hearing on the interim ordinance that created a moratorium in Ward 13, as well as the huge number of emails and calls that have come in, show how much people care about the future of our Minneapolis neighborhoods. I voted along with my Z&P committee colleagues to continue this item one cycle, which means it will be back at the Zoning and Planning Committee on April 3. This will give staff time to prepare a detailed recommendation that takes into account all the feedback we have received. This does leave the moratorium in effect. I take property rights very seriously and do not take even this brief moratorium lightly. However, I want to make sure we have a clear strategy for addressing the short and long term changes that need to be made to protect the rights of existing residents. We also need to ensure new residents will live in neighborhoods that are not impacted by construction issues that have gotten out of control. I am confident that with CM Palmisanos leadership this will come to a conclusion that leads to better results for all of our residents, current and future.
