Todays rant before going to bed involves a new post on Facebook for Business. For background, see https://facebook/business/news/Organic-Reach-on-Facebook So many things to call out here, so little time. Our goal is always to provide the best experience for the people that use Facebook. So that includes auto-start videos, splitting up a single app into ever-more pieces, and sponsored ads that all but ensure an ad is seen by irrelevant groups? Having fans should not be thought of as an end unto itself. So if fans = potential customers, having more is somehow not good? Tell me, which businesses dont require more customers? That theres no mention of the fake likes posts is telling as well. It says we have no comeback to that, and were hoping its buried and forgotten about. Of course. Here are some businesses — big and small — that have seen strong results by using Facebook to reach beyond their fans: Three of the four explicitly mention their success on Facebook as a direct result of his ads - implying yes, you do have to pay to play to succeed on Facebook. The fourth doesnt explicitly say Ads were the cause for success, but you dont get that kind of targeting without ads... So... organic reach only equals success if you pay us...? Like TV, search, newspapers, radio and virtually every other marketing platform, Facebook is far more effective when businesses use paid media to help meet their goals. Very mafiaesque. Pay us or find your business unable to compete (or survive). Your business won’t always appear on the first page of a search result unless you’re paying to be part of that space. Clearly you misunderstand SEO / SEM techniques, which *dont* necessarily require payments. In fact, Google has made it a point to crack down on the folks paying for better position, especially when theyre in a position to gain from it. Unless the internet doesnt work in your cubicle, you might remember Googles crackdown on Expedia... From a page talking about that crackdown: Paid links not only give an unfair advantage to companies with large marketing budgets, they also falsely increase rankings. Google does everything it can to base rankings on content quality and search relevancy, and black hat tactics like paid links work to counteract that mission. So in sum, the organic rankings have declined, and the only way to reach more people is to pay for it. What have we missed here?
