Todays rant brought to you by the letter E... E for Ebola. I - TopicsExpress

Todays rant brought to you by the letter E... E for Ebola. I did a call recently in which a female was having abdominal pain... cramps and spotting after finding out she was a couple of weeks pregnant. She was of African origin and did not speak English. Her child was brought to the hospital for lack of anyone to care for the child at home. Shortly after clearing the hospital, we were sent to isolation for a brief time because the child was placed in a positive pressure room after finding out about recent travel to Africa and having sniffles. Prior to arrival at the hospital, there was no sniffle present, nor so much as a cough. Once at the ER, the kid started screaming its head off... hence the new found sniffles. Makes it easy to see where the snot came from, right? Shortly after, through further translation, they discovered the travel was not recent at all and we were cleared. I understand the risk and the fear surrounding Ebola, but in this case, the location in Africa was completely disregarded (not west Africa,) and the signs and symptoms of the patient were not taken in to account. This ebola scare was brought on due to the sheer fact that this person was from Africa and did not speak English. I find it disgusting and incredibly ignorant that in as diverse a world as we live in, your race and simple lack of knowledge of a language can get you branded as having a disease such as Ebola. We all want to go home safe at the end of the night, and not pass along anything to our loved ones... I completely understand and agree, but at what point do we let fear mongering label an entire race, and let it over rule common sense. If presented with this exact call and exact circumstances 100 times, I would treat it this way every time. People need to use knowledge and common sense to make a decision, not make one based on fear. If we cant do that, you might as well bring the camps back and start herding everybody that fits the profile in to them. Lets all be safe out there and think about the situations at hand before jumping to insane conclusions based in racisim, okay?! -Fluffy
