When my husband and I moved to Northern Virginia, his parents decided to split their time between Florida and here in Fairfax VA. Unfortunately, after only 1 year, we lost my Mother-in-Law. My Father-in-law, Perry, was devastated and alone. He and my husband, Paul, decided one day to grab breakfast at the Silver Diner down the street. They enjoyed their Senior breakfast of bacon and eggs, their favorite breakfast. They talked and enjoyed each others company that morning. The next week, my husband called his father and said, lets go to the Silver Diner. This became a ritual and brought them together every week to discuss, current events, politics and the grandchildren. When Perry moved to a wonderful independent senior building, the breakfasts continued with Paul. One day Perry suggested to the men in his building that they go to the Silver Diner for brunch. They loved it! Soon the wives joined and thus another ritual began. Perry and Paul would walk in the restaurant and ask for Vinnys table each week. They loved having a personal waiter and he knew just what they would order. Sadly, Perry passed away in 2010. My husband still goes to the Silver Diner occasionally for breakfast by him self, of course missing his Dad but knowing he is there with him.
