Todays regurgitation: Going through uni doing my Social Work degree - I made it my business to research material on culturally appropriate practice. Doing my placement on a First Nations community, I observed a total lack of this consideration from approximately half the non First Nations people working there. Not a problem in that place, because the people who didnt get it were simply frozen out. Its not okay when these sorts of people go out into the wider community. They do harm. I also witnessed a lack of awareness with some of the Professors at uni, who did not practice what they got so much money to preach. Personally, I have tried my very best to break down the cultural barriers acquired in my upbringing , learning all I could along the way about the true history of the world and this country. Different ways of thinking and being also. This is my lifes education - my chosen major. Learning must be ongoing. Break down the thinking, break down the barriers. Keep taking a pick axe to those suckers. Never be afraid to get a right bollocking, because you always will - thats a very important part of the learning process. Never, ever be too smug and comfortable. Above all - LISTEN! Can be said for life full stop really. Sometimes Ive looked back and seen bad move, after bad move in a certain area of my life and I ask, who is that person?? Profoundly sorry for those bad moves, but gathering what dignity I can, I walk on and just keep kin learning. That is all. kin life! Will get this book and read it. Open to other suggestions......
