Todays troubling news is a continuation of the failed Obama administration foreign policy. While I am pleased that Alan Gross will be returning home, I fear that he is being used as a symbol to allow the oppressive Castro regime in Cuba to acquire desperately needed American capital. It is also concerning that the Obama administration has been negotiating in secret without any input from Congress. Whether President Obama likes it or not, he will have to involve Congress in the next steps of relations with the Cuban regime. Congress ultimately has the power to appropriate funding for any potential new U.S. embassy in Havana as well as approval of any nomination for a potential new U.S. ambassador to Cuba. I continue to reaffirm my longstanding position that until there are free and fair democratic elections in Cuba, we should not proceed with any steps towards normalization of relations or appeasement of the current Castro regime.
