Todays update from our director of science, Adam Whelchel, who is on assignment with Kenyas Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (lewa.org.) On a patrol to help protect rhinos from poaching, We came across a 2,000-year-old Mbao board carved into the rock, Adam says. Mbao is one of the oldest games and is still very popular among men across East Africa. The rules of the game are transferred orally from Mbao master to apprentice and vary greatly from one tribe or geography to another. Picture a group of nomadic pasturalists like the Maasai playing Mbao as their cattle grazed below over 2,000 years ago. Adam is almost at the middle of this two-week assignment with Lewa, where hes helping develop a five-year plan to reach Lewas long-term goals. More posts to come!
